Berkshire Hathaway is one of those stocks that can look expensive and cheap at the same time. You pull up the quote, glance at price-to-book, maybe compare it with last quarter, and still come away unsure what one Class B share is actually worth. That confusion is normal. Berkshire is not a simple operating company, and it is not just an investment portfolio either.
If you want a useful estimate of BRK.B intrinsic value, the best approach is not to hunt for one magic number. It is to separate the business into understandable parts, update the obvious inputs, and build a value range that reflects how Berkshire really earns money. That means looking at public stock holdings, wholly owned businesses, insurance operations, and the large cash pile without blending everything into one rough multiple.
The goal here is practical: how to think through Berkshire’s value in a way that is clear enough to use, but realistic enough not to mislead you.
A normal company can often be valued with a simple earnings multiple or a discounted cash flow model based on one set of operating results. Berkshire does not cooperate with that kind of shortcut.
Part of the company is easy to mark: its listed equity holdings have market prices. Another part is made up of wholly owned businesses like BNSF, Berkshire Hathaway Energy, manufacturing operations, service businesses, and retail units. Then there is insurance float, which can be an asset if underwriting stays disciplined, but still needs careful treatment. On top of that, Berkshire holds a huge amount of cash and short-term Treasury bills that should not be mixed casually with operating earnings.
This is why analysts can look at the same filings and still produce very different fair value estimates. One person emphasizes the stock portfolio. Another focuses on normalized earnings from the operating companies. Another gives extra weight to capital allocation quality and the value of having deployable cash in stressed markets.
Interest rates complicate things further. Higher rates can increase income from cash and Treasuries, but they also affect discount rates and what investors are willing to pay for future earnings. That can move intrinsic value estimates even when Berkshire itself has not changed much operationally.
So if your first pass feels messy, that is not a sign you are doing it wrong. It is a sign the company deserves a more structured model.
For most investors, the cleanest way to estimate Berkshire Hathaway intrinsic value is a sum-of-the-parts model. It mirrors the way the company is built.

This structure solves a common mistake. Investors often apply one multiple to Berkshire’s total earnings and assume that captures everything. It usually does not. A single multiple can understate the value of listed holdings or overstate the value of earnings that are boosted by interest income on excess liquidity.
When you split the parts, the logic becomes more transparent. If the stock portfolio rises, you can see the effect. If railroad earnings weaken for a year, you can isolate that instead of letting it distort the entire estimate. If Berkshire’s cash grows, that gets recognized directly rather than buried inside a blended valuation.
This is also the easiest way to compare your estimate with the market price of BRK.B. You are not asking whether Berkshire is worth exactly one number. You are asking whether the sum of very large, understandable pieces suggests a meaningful gap between value and price.
Book value has long been associated with Berkshire, and it is still useful as a reference point. But it is no longer enough on its own.
Years ago, book value growth tracked Berkshire’s economic progress more closely because the investment portfolio dominated the story. Today, a much larger share of Berkshire’s worth comes from high-quality operating businesses that can earn well above the carrying values shown on the balance sheet. A railroad, utility network, or durable manufacturing business may be far more valuable than its accounting value suggests.
That is the key difference in the BRK.B book value vs intrinsic value discussion. Book value tells you something about net assets. Intrinsic value tries to capture what those assets and businesses can produce over time under sensible management.
Price-to-book still helps in a few ways. It gives historical context. It can show when the market is unusually pessimistic or unusually generous. And it can act as a rough reasonableness check against your broader model.
But if the analysis stops there, it misses too much. Berkshire’s business mix has evolved. Share repurchases change per-share economics. Higher earnings from non-insurance subsidiaries matter more than they once did. The company’s ability to allocate retained capital also deserves weight that book value alone cannot fully capture.
Use book value as a starting reference, not as the final answer. That keeps it useful without giving it more authority than it deserves.
The trickiest part of Berkshire is usually the collection of wholly owned businesses. You do not need a perfect model, but you do need a disciplined one.
Start with normalized earnings rather than the noisiest recent quarter. For BNSF, look at what freight volumes, margins, and capital intensity may look like through a cycle, not just during a soft patch or unusually strong demand period. For Berkshire Hathaway Energy, think in terms of stable, regulated earnings and long-duration asset value. For manufacturing, service, and retail units, expect more variation and use conservative assumptions.
Many investors value these businesses with segment-level earnings multiples instead of trying to build a detailed discounted cash flow for every unit. That is reasonable. A railroad may deserve one type of multiple, a regulated utility another, and a mixed industrial group a lower or midrange multiple depending on quality and cyclicality.
The important part is consistency. If you use strong multiples, pair them with sober growth assumptions. If you expect weak near-term earnings to recover, do not also apply distressed valuations to the same businesses.
A DCF can still help as a cross-check. Not because it will produce a precise answer, but because it forces you to show what assumptions are doing the work. If a small discount rate change swings your estimate sharply, that tells you the model is fragile.
In practice, Berkshire valuation methods work best when earnings-based estimates for the operating companies are combined with separately valued public holdings and cash. That blended approach usually reflects economic reality better than forcing the whole company into one formula.
A lot of weak Berkshire analysis breaks down in the details rather than the big picture.
The first common error is mishandling cash. Berkshire’s cash and Treasury balances are valuable in their own right, but if you capitalize earnings that already include interest income from those assets and then add the cash on top, you can double count. You need to decide whether cash is being valued as a separate asset or through earnings power. Usually, separating it is cleaner.
The second issue is insurance float. Float is not the same as ordinary debt, but it should not be treated as free magic capital either. Its value depends on underwriting discipline, cost of funds, and the durability of the insurance franchise. Berkshire has historically managed float exceptionally well, which is one reason many investors give it favorable treatment. Even so, the assumption should be explicit.
The third problem is share count and class economics. BRK.A and BRK.B represent the same underlying business with different proportional rights. Your per-share estimate has to reflect that correctly. If the total equity value is sound but the share conversion is wrong, the final BRK.B intrinsic value number will be off.
This is where SEC filings matter. They give you current share counts, segment results, balance sheet detail, and management commentary. If a valuation looks too optimistic or too low, check the mechanics before revisiting the larger thesis. Often the problem is not the concept. It is a double count, stale holding value, or incorrect per-share math.
Once the parts are estimated, the last step is resisting false precision.
Berkshire is a perfect example of why a valuation range is more honest than one target. Public holdings move. Interest income changes with rates and cash levels. Operating businesses can post temporary weakness or strength. A few turns on an earnings multiple, or a small change in discount rate, can shift your estimate more than you expect.

What matters is not proving one exact fair value. It is deciding whether today’s price gives you enough room for your assumptions to be wrong.

If one valuation method gives a wildly different answer from the rest, that is not a reason to cherry-pick it. It is a reason to inspect the assumptions. Sometimes the outlier reveals a hidden mistake. Sometimes it reveals that one method simply does not fit Berkshire’s structure very well.
The point of this process is not to create institutional-grade precision. It is to make your thinking cleaner. Berkshire often attracts snap judgments because the company is famous and the data is abundant. But abundance is not the same as clarity.
